Exterior Lighting

The entrance of a home sets the style and mood of its owners. Choosing a fixture that is properly proportioned to its surroundings is critical. There are 3 general types of exterior fixtures you can purchase, they are shown here on the right sidebar.

Sizing is the main issue when dealing with exterior lighting, as there are many different sized homes. While it can be tricky at first, sizing exterior fixtures is accomplished easily when you visualize the space in comparison to the fixture. The more information you can measure, the better the match will be between the exterior lights and the home. Measurements of the space are essential!

As you’ll soon notice, many companies offer exterior lights in a series of sizes ranging from miniscule to gigantic. Most manufacturers will also make post and pier versions of their wall-mounted fixtures to make matching even easier. In general, it is a must to have the exterior lights from the same series on any given side of the house.
As consumers we often make the mistake of selecting outdoor lighting fixtures that are too small because we match the size of the existing (builder-grade) fixtures. The photos on the following pages show different size fixtures of the same design in the identical installation. Let your eyes be the judge. One size does not fit all!
