Pendants and Island Lights

Pendants and Island Fixtures are used to Illuminate a kitchen island space, cast some light on a pool table, or light up a bar or seating area. Stylish and effective, these hanging lighting fixtures provide light right where its needed most – directly onto the surface.

Pendant selection depends on several factors :

Size of surface to be illuminated
Availability of electrical connections in ceiling (multiple junction boxes or a single, centered junction box)
In general, single pendants are used in a formula of 1 pendant per 2 feet of surface length. For example, a 6’ long island will accommodate 3 single pendants nicely. A 4’ peninsula will nicely accommodate 2 single pendants. Of course, some pendants are much larger in width than others, and adjustments to this formula would be made in those situations.
If using a pendant fixture with multiple lights (shown at right), the general rule is to spread light over most of the length of the island without being equal to or longer than the length of the island. Much like sizing a chandelier, a good guideline is to stay within at least 6” of the end of the countertop. (see pictures on the next page)
